6th Sense

The Sixth Sense is a 1999 American thriller film, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It tells the story of Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a troubled, isolated boy who is able to see and talk to the dead, and an equally troubled child psychologist (Bruce Willis) who tries to help him. The film established Shyamalan as a writer and director, and introduced the cinema public to his signatures, most notably his affinity for twist endings. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

When i watch the opening sequence it caused a lot of questions to be created straight from the begging. The t
itles last for quite a long period of t
ime which as i said before in my blog entry 'Title Se
quence' long titles make you loose your concentration and get irritated.
However as the movie
fin
ally starts, we see a lady who is dressed nice going dow
n into a cellar. This makes us ask "Who is she? "What is going on?" "Is she alone?". This is goo
d as it follows the thriller convention of creating questions which now keeps the audience lock in. This Sho
t of of the light bulb just turning on is a good shot as it creates a feeling that she is going to a lon
ely place where no one is. This creates tension as it is a
thriller, the audience feels that something bad is goin
g to happen now.

There is another scene where we see the lady is alighted by a sound and turns around suddenly in a slight fright as she now feels scared. The master shot grabs her shadow in the background which gives that sense of fear and and also that "She Is Not Alone" feeling.
During These scenes the music comes across as very eerie. Thrillers use this to set the atmosphere and almost force people to feel like they should be ready to ask themselves a lot of questions. The music gradually gets louder and louder which makes the audience become more and more on-edge.
As the women is dressed uo all fancy , the mise en scence implies that she is coming from either a party or a good night out and is down in the cellar to get additional accessories to her night.
The Cellar is dark, greyish and shadowy which shows to the views that she somehow is in the wrong place at the wrong time.
