6th Sense

The Sixth Sense is a 1999 American thriller film, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It tells the story of Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a troubled, isolated boy who is able to see and talk to the dead, and an equally troubled child psychologist (Bruce Willis) who tries to help him. The film established Shyamalan as a writer and director, and introduced the cinema public to his signatures, most notably his affinity for twist endings. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

When i watch the opening sequence it caused a lot of questions to be created straight from the begging. The t
itles last for quite a long period of t
ime which as i said before in my blog entry 'Title Se
quence' long titles make you loose your concentration and get irritated.
However as the movie
fin
ally starts, we see a lady who is dressed nice going dow
n into a cellar. This makes us ask "Who is she? "What is going on?" "Is she alone?". This is goo
d as it follows the thriller convention of creating questions which now keeps the audience lock in. This Sho
t of of the light bulb just turning on is a good shot as it creates a feeling that she is going to a lon
ely place where no one is. This creates tension as it is a
thriller, the audience feels that something bad is goin
g to happen now.

There is another scene where we see the lady is alighted by a sound and turns around suddenly in a slight fright as she now feels scared. The master shot grabs her shadow in the background which gives that sense of fear and and also that "She Is Not Alone" feeling.
During These scenes the music comes across as very eerie. Thrillers use this to set the atmosphere and almost force people to feel like they should be ready to ask themselves a lot of questions. The music gradually gets louder and louder which makes the audience become more and more on-edge.
As the women is dressed uo all fancy , the mise en scence implies that she is coming from either a party or a good night out and is down in the cellar to get additional accessories to her night.
The Cellar is dark, greyish and shadowy which shows to the views that she somehow is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Define : Continuity Editing

Continuity editing is amedments used inbetween shots as self – effacing as it possible .
This way of editing is the reason why we do not really notice editing the mojourity od the time due to it coming across so natural. The shots appear to flow from one to another to show continuity.

Continuity Editing has 4 main techniques which consists of :

180 degree rule - The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line.

Master shot - A master shot is a film recording of an entire dramatized scene, from start to finish, from an angle that keeps all the players in view. It is often a long shot and can sometimes perform a double function as an establishing shot.

Shot reverse shot - Shot reverse shot is a film technique wherein one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking "back" at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

Match on action - A match on action, a technique used in film editing, is a cut that connects two different views of the same action at the same moment in the movement.

During a week of Media, my group and I have done many things in our preliminary task. First we had to form into groups of 3 and then come up with storyboards on what each of us thought would be a good idea for an short opening scene. Me and my group then put all our best ideas together to form the main scene of our task. As we started to film, we already had many pre-ideas so we was all set to start filming. We decided to film each shot twice as there was a possibility of there being some mistakes. For one lesson, i was absent so my group had to improvise and do both filming and camera movement which did pay off.
