Audience Research 2

Audience Research 1

Title Sequences

My title sequence for my movie is going to look similar to the 1 you see below which is take from the movie The Impostors.

My opening title sequence is going to start of with Writing and then switches to the film to reveal the vibe up slowly and then go back to Writing and then to Part of the film again.

I find this way quite entertaining as it teases the audience and also keeps them focused rather than them just reading a whole lot of text and loosing concentration due to the movie taking so long to start.

Conventions of an Thriller movie

After a while, we wrote the conventions of Thriller movies down.

The Conventions of a Thriller Movie are :

*Violence

*Mysterious

*Dark Scenes

*Eerie music

*Suspense

*Enemies

*Shock

*Screams Tension

*2faced characters

* A Twist *The Unexpected

*Crime Scenes.

After we did this, we began to watch the opening sequence of the film 'Memento'(Nolan, 2000, U.S.) which enabled us to write some detailed notes and also spot the conventions we had previously written down .

Wallander ( Firewall , BBC )

Feelings that i feel are ,
Uncomfortable and Nervous } Due to the Eering music
The intro is opened by the eerie music
You dont see any characters untill a good few seconds after you see the setting
Back And Fourth Close up shots of two girls which then introduces them to the film
The two girls seem to be :
Vulnerable - Because they are walking in the middle of bascicly the middle of now where and they are also young.
Nervous - The way they are walking is not casual , it is almost as if they are power walking and trying to get away from something even though they do not tend to be looking back.
Determined and slyly aggressive - Their walk is powerfull and the body posture of how they are walking is determined because as i said it looks like they are determined to either get away or reach their destination without running.

At this moment of time the questions that are going through my head are Audience:

Who are the girls?
Where is this place?
Why are they out in the middle of no where?
Whats going to happen, Why are they Rushing?

Costumes and Facal Expressions:

The way they dress and there facial expressions and also the state of their hair shows signs of being rebelious . The one with the red hair shows this more due to red connotating fiery, ander , hot headed etc.
Her facial expressions gives signs of that she is determined and she looks angry which could hint that she may be part of the violence. (backs up my point on being rebelious).

This is a screen shot of the knife used in the opening scene, the blood covering it shows elaborates on the fact that the girls are ruthless and do not follow the stereotypical female.

[ Wallander Notes ]

Double Idemnity

This Opeing Sequence is in black and white which inplies that it is an old opeining sequence and that all the colour thriller opening sequences we have viewed before are newer and more recent.. At the beginning of Double Idemnity we see a car speeding across the roads and not stopping for anything which gets the viewers worring and cautious to see if it is going to cause any damage to anyone else and cause a crime scene which are in most thrillers.

The sound goes well with the scar speed as it builds up tension and also adds ,more effect to the sequence which is a typical thriller convention.

There is a master shot where the two cars nearly collide which causes tension to the audience and also, like typical thrillers they have close-up shots regularly used throughout the whole opening to not give much information away.

Questions are asked as to why the man is in such a hurry to reach his destination , and also who he is due to the fact thsat we only get short snippets of his face during the sequence.

Kiss Me Deadly

Kiss me deadly starts off with a women running which straight away brings attention the audience and makes them ask questions what is she running from? Why is She Running?

It also creates a sense of fear due to the fact that she is running in the middle of a road.

The sound goes well with the sequence due to it building im masses of tension and also, the diagetic screeching sound of the car rearing around her gives that ' Thank God' feeling as she nearly lost her life.

The Mans Car that she boards seems to be a stranger and before he lets her in his dialouge was ' You nearly Wrecked My Car' he does not sound like he is in a happy mood for her to get in without any hesistation creates more questions in the audiences head as the viewers are wondering ' Where is the Man going to Take or Do with Her?

Kiss me deadly is a weird thriller opening but it follows the thriller conventions but making the audience ask questions straight from the start.

Brick

Brick has a successful, typical opening sequence that matches
the genre of a thriller movie. Brick uses diffrent types of conventions
which relates back to thrillers we've seen and thrillers overall. The conventions thrillers that are include in the opening sequence of brick are conventions such as , close ups ,crime scence a dead person (in this case a women) and an adbandoned setting.

The questions these conventions make us ask are :
HOW DID SHE DIE ? WHY IS SHE DEAD ?
WHO IS SHE ? WHAT DID SHE DO TO DESERVE THIS?

The film's narrative centers on a hardboiled detective story that takes place in suburbia. Most of the main characters are high school students. The film draws heavily in plot, characterization, and dialogue from hardboiled classics. The title refers to a block of heroin, compressed roughly to the size and shape of a brick.

SNEAKY FACT :

BRICK WAS FILMED IN ONLY 20 DAYS AND THE EFFECTS WERE CHEAP EFFECTS USED ON THE CAMERA.

Analysis of Memento 1

From the opening of Memento we see that it is a thriller by the mood set and also by the establishing medium close up shot of the scene.
We see a hand held picture of a crime scene which has what presumably blood scattered over the wall. This camera shot makes the audience straight away ask questions which a thriller intends to do

However, we see the criminals face which creates more questions for the audeince to ask due to the fact that thrillers do not normally reveal who the killer is untill the end of the movie. This is what makes Memento such a good thriller due to the amount of questions and dis comfort it causes the veiwers.

From the opening sequence of Memento I can tell that it is a thriller by:

1.Cinematography- It has a Close up of a crime scene picture fading away. Close Ups are used in thrillers so that they do not reveal much evidence to the audience and it keeps them guessing and wondering.

There are also Close up shots of :

The man's face with blood.

The Mans Glasses

Blood Drooling on the Floor

Mans Body

Bullet - This is a imoortant close up as it reveals the weapon which was used

Gun Firing

These Close Up make Memento come across as a thriller straight from the start due to the crime scene which is a big convention in the Thriller Genre.

Mise - en -scene -The Scenes are very dull and dark which is very unrevealing and causes a sense of fear. When We see him in his bedroom it is almost black and white.

EDITING- The opening is played in reverse order ( Rewinding) makes uswonder why it did not just start off with it. Also, we see a master shot of the criminal engaging in a shooting of supposingly the victim which also makes the audience wonder why he is commiting the crime , what has the victim done to deserve this. -

Flashbacks Keeps going back to the black and white scenes that are in chronological order

SOUND- Eerie , Creepy Music Straight from the start , Loud Gun Shot Noise , Man Shouting Out - Dialogue.

Brief

As a particpant in AS media students we have been set a task to create the title and opening of a new fiction film to last a maxium of 2 minutes we have been split into groups of three my group is me, Emma Martin and Paige arnold. Even through the project we will be working together as a group , the final cut of the editing of the film will be done individauly so we can express our idea's and add what we feel goes best without feeling held back and give our self the chance to get the best grade possible.

What i Learnt Last Lesson

In my last lesson of media studies with Ms.Cunliffe , I learnt quite a few things that benifited me and which also set my mind upon what i need to do within the space of now and june ( when our exams will be sat). I firt took intrest in our practical assignment brief of in media which is worth half/ 50% of our overall grade. The brief stated for us to get into groups to make the opening of fiction film of our own which should last a maxium of 2 minutes. Alongside the brief, we was given a mark scheme which had the diffrent criterias I need to meet in order to get the grades i myself will like to get. As i always stride and aim to get the best which i can get, i aim aiming to get the level 4 target which is the highest i could get. Where it says level 4 on the criteria it tells me what i need to do in order to get this particular grade. To do this i need to make sure the quality of my work it to an 'Excellent' standard. Hopefully i will succeed and get this grade i am stiving for.

Also During my media lesson , we was on the topic of Thriller movies. Many individuals such as myself got the conventions of Thriller movies and Horror movies mixed up.
From my point of view, i will say that thrillers are more movie based on suspense, showing especially the victim's point of of view. To me, horror is more about showing "horrid" things on screen such as murders or torture. The suspense in a thriller does not necessarily result in gruesome acts.
Thrillers are quite sophisticated which means that they are aimed at more of a sophisticated audience

Reflection on Planning

As we got put into groups of 3, each individual had their storyboard which we put our ideas on. As a group , we had to put and merge our ideas into one big main storyboard which will will film. At 1st it started of slow due to the fact that we never really spoke to our group memebers at all. But after a few minutes we graduallly got speaking and got along with each other quite well.

6th Sense

The Sixth Sense is a 1999 American thriller film, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It tells the story of Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a troubled, isolated boy who is able to see and talk to the dead, and an equally troubled child psychologist (Bruce Willis) who tries to help him. The film established Shyamalan as a writer and director, and introduced the cinema public to his signatures, most notably his affinity for twist endings. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

wiki/The_Sixth_Sense

When i watch the opening sequence it caused a lot of questions to be created straight from the begging. The t
itles last for quite a long period of t
ime which as i said before in my blog entry 'Title Se
quence' long titles make you loose your concentration and get irritated.
However as the movie
fin
ally starts, we see a lady who is dressed nice going dow
n into a cellar. This makes us ask "Who is she? "What is going on?" "Is she alone?". This is goo
d as it follows the thriller convention of creating questions which now keeps the audience lock in. This Sho
t of of the light bulb just turning on is a good shot as it creates a feeling that she is going to a lon
ely place where no one is. This creates tension as it is a
thriller, the audience feels that something bad is goin
g to happen now.

There is another scene where we see the lady is alighted by a sound and turns around suddenly in a slight fright as she now feels scared. The master shot grabs her shadow in the background which gives that sense of fear and and also that "She Is Not Alone" feeling.
During These scenes the music comes across as very eerie. Thrillers use this to set the atmosphere and almost force people to feel like they should be ready to ask themselves a lot of questions. The music gradually gets louder and louder which makes the audience become more and more on-edge.
As the women is dressed uo all fancy , the mise en scence implies that she is coming from either a party or a good night out and is down in the cellar to get additional accessories to her night.
The Cellar is dark, greyish and shadowy which shows to the views that she somehow is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Define : Continuity Editing

Continuity editing is amedments used inbetween shots as self – effacing as it possible .
This way of editing is the reason why we do not really notice editing the mojourity od the time due to it coming across so natural. The shots appear to flow from one to another to show continuity.

Continuity Editing has 4 main techniques which consists of :

180 degree rule - The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line.

Master shot - A master shot is a film recording of an entire dramatized scene, from start to finish, from an angle that keeps all the players in view. It is often a long shot and can sometimes perform a double function as an establishing shot.

Shot reverse shot - Shot reverse shot is a film technique wherein one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking "back" at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

Match on action - A match on action, a technique used in film editing, is a cut that connects two different views of the same action at the same moment in the movement.

During a week of Media, my group and I have done many things in our preliminary task. First we had to form into groups of 3 and then come up with storyboards on what each of us thought would be a good idea for an short opening scene. Me and my group then put all our best ideas together to form the main scene of our task. As we started to film, we already had many pre-ideas so we was all set to start filming. We decided to film each shot twice as there was a possibility of there being some mistakes. For one lesson, i was absent so my group had to improvise and do both filming and camera movement which did pay off.
